Many health professionals believe that the increase in HDL or good cholesterol may protect against coronary heart disease significantly . However, a recent study published in The Lancet reveals different things. Experts believe , increase the levels of good cholesterol ( HDL) may have no effect on the risk of heart disease prevention .
"This is an assumption that if a patient or group of patients to do something that causes them to increase HDL levels , they assume the risk of heart attack goes down ," said lead researcher Sekar Kathiresan , Harvard Medical School.
In his study, the researchers used a database of genetic information . The analysis results showed that people who are genetically predisposed to have high levels of good cholesterol (HDL), was found to have the same risk of developing heart disease than those who had higher levels of bad cholesterol ( LDL ) .
The researchers add , considering that there is currently no drug available on the market that can increase HDL levels , in particular, is difficult to prove that this method can reduce the risk of heart attack a person.
"This is an interesting finding , since we have long argued that HDL is the good way to prevent the risk of heart disease ," Dr. Nieca Goldberg , a cardiologist and medical director of the Joan Tisch for Women's Health at NYU Langone Medical Center.
Goldberg, who was not involved in the study , said more research must be done based on the results of previous studies actually found conflicting results.
"Is it because of low levels of HDL are associated with other risk factors such as obesity and high triglycerides ? " Goldberg said. " The other issue (which is raised in this study) is that we have no other evidence of research to support the administration of drugs to raise HDL cholesterol levels , " he added .
However, Goldberg said , the current treatment is generally to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol ( LDL) - not to increase HDL . The results may have little impact on patient care .
"Sport is one of the most natural ways to increase HDL , and I think people should continue to exercise because it obviously other additional benefits , such as lowering blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight and maintain the arteries (blood vessels ) is more elastic and flexible , "said Goldberg.
Goldberg also recommends that people should focus on preventable risk factors such as tobacco use, limiting unhealthy foods such as sugar and starch, and increase the amount of intake of omega - 3 , to reduce the risk of heart attack . We expect everyone to continue to perform their regular checkups with your doctor to control blood pressure and cholesterol .
